My first book, published in , was a challenge—the technology was evolving and both the hardware and software were changing rapidly.

    The committee then held three study sessions focused on product design, materials supply and development, and state-of-the-art computer-aided systems technology for materials selection. The first study session consisted of a site visit to the Boeing Commercial Airplane Company in Seattle, Washington, to learn about materials selection within. Zhuming Bi, PhD, is a Professor in the Department of Civil and Mechanical Engineering at Purdue University in Fort Wayne, Indiana, USA. He has over 30 years of experience in Computer Aided Design and Manufacturing (CAD/CAM). Xiaoqin Wang, PhD, is an Associate Professor in the School of Mechanical Engineering at Nanjing University of Science and Technology in Nanjing, China.

This chapter considers the growing position of computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) in fashion and textiles, and the way in which technologies have impacted the design and development practice and process.
